Visakha Vidyalaya kicked off the ‘INFO-V ICT’ exhibition last year on a small scale but this year it has plans to organise it on a much larger scale.

Last year’s event at the school auditorium was a two-day exhibition that drew 7,000 visitors. This year the exhibition will be held at the SL Conventions Centre in Colombo from July 3-5. Around 15,000 visitors are expected at this years’ exhibition, the orgaising committee said at a media briefing held in BMICH last week.

Speaking to the Business Times on the sidelines of the media briefing, Project Chairman of the organising committee Maduranga Perera said that there will be new technological innovations from Singapore and mostly from India at this year’s exhibition. Also the exhibition will conduct a job pavilion for students and ICT enthusiasts to look at the opportunities available in the market, he added.

Themed ‘Smart Destination’ – the knowledge hub brings the latest in technological advancements and innovations. There will be different zones exhibited at this year’s event namely student zone, knowledge zone, industrial zone, activation zone, ICT competition and ICT Awards, Mr. Perera said at the briefing. “ICT has been a driving force of Sri Lanka’s economic development for more than a decade. It is one of the key skills that need to be made available to all students in the context of current globalisation. It is critical that every Sri Lankan has access to an up-to-date information network with a sound knowledge of ICT in order to achieve both personal and collective goals,” affirmed Mr. Perera.

Visakha Vidyalaya Principal Sandamali Aviruppola said, “The primary objective of the exhibition is to enhance the usage of ICT on a broader perspective among young adults and school children for effective learning and development. Until now ICT in Sri Lanka has predominantly been a male domain. We wish to change this radically and include women to balance the inequalities. Our goal is to equip them with the ICT knowledge to lead a smarter lifestyle. We also wish to support the national policy of achieving

75 per cent ICT literacy by 2016. Added to this is the creation of awareness among the general public of the developments in technology and their applications in day-to-day life, opportunities for business and for employment in the ICT industry.”
