The first Computer Crime Seminar by the Information Technology (IT) Division of Police Headquarters (HQ) was conducted for boys’ schools’ in Kandy recently, in collaboration with the IT Division of Kandy Police.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Charge of the IT Division at Police HQ Dananjaya Hettiarachchi said their intention was to promote the use of the computers in a productive manner, and also warn the students of the detrimental effects of computers when they fall into the wrong hands. He said that parents too have a responsibility to check on their children’s use of computers.

ASP Hettiarachchi said that it was alright to use social media like Facebook which even parents could use, but adults should keep a tab on the friends their children are in contact with. He said that this seminar intends to highlight the harm that could be done to children where students have become pawns in the hands of persons who win the confidence of children and then abuse them.

He said there was also the danger of tricking people out of their money, saying they have won lotteries, and draw monies. “By all means use computers, but use them wisely,” said ASP Hettiaratchchi.

Among the speakers was Dr S Weerasena of the Kandy General Hospital, and CERTIS from Colombo.

Around 1,000 students and nearly 250 parents attended this seminar.

The seminar was coordinated by Kandy Police IT Unit Head, Inspector H.M. Mudananayake.
