Police have submitted a report to Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage giving reasons why they released Neurosurgeon Maheshi Wijeratne on police bail though she was accused of assaulting a participant at a fundraising event in a Colombo hotel last month.

The report submitted by Senior Superintendent Champika Siriwardene says the Fort Police OIC released Dr. Wijeratne because the Judicial Medical Officer’s report had not indicated that the victim, Rhonda de Ley had suffered grievous injuries.

The Magistrate had sought a report from the Deputy Inspector General in charge of Colombo, after Ms. De Ley’s lawyers raised queries regarding the grounds on which police bail was granted when the case was first taken up on March 13.

In this case Ms. De Ley had complained that Dr. Wijeratne had assaulted her at the Galadari Hotel when the Zonta charity fund raising programme was in progress on February 28. According to her complaint, Dr. Wijeratne had smashed a wine glass on her temple and slashed her arm with the broken glass.

The case will be taken up for hearing again on June 16.

Asela Rekawa and Sajitha Jayawardana appeared for the complainant.
