Kinross six-mile Sea swim today
View(s):The 50th Annual Open Six-mile Sea Swim organised by the Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club (KSLSC), affiliated to the Sri Lanka Amateur Swimming Union, will be held today.
The race will be flagged off at 7.00am from the beach opposite the club house at Wellawatte, the swimmers travelling along the coast, turning around an anchored boat opposite the Mount Lavinia Hotel for the return leg that ends at the point where it started from.
It is open to swimmers over the age of 15 years, of both genders, who apply through a club. All those who complete the course within a time of four and a half hours (4½) will be issued certificates of participation. Of the 120 swimmers who participated in the 2014 swim, 80 finished within the time limit.
Meanwhile, trophies and awards will be presented to the first male swimmer to finish and the first female swimmer (M.G. Sirimanne Memorial CC and John Roche CC respectively); for the first male swimmer of KSLSC to finish and the first female from the club (Dama Perera Memorial CC and George de Bruin Memorial CC respectively); for the youngest male swimmer to finish within the time limit (Maharaja CC) and the youngest female swimmer (President’s CC, presented by Mr. Morgan Fernando); and for the oldest swimmer (Tissa Ariyaratne CC).
The KSLSC, a pioneering club that has been providing life saving services on the beach at Wellawatte since 1941, has been organising this competitive sea swim for many years. This year will be a milestone as it will be the 50th year.
The Kinross six-mile sea swim is the longest such race in Sri Lanka, as most of the other open sea races are two-mile and more recently 5 km.
