In order to strengthen administration within schools, the National Institute of Education (NIE) intends to train graduates to assist principals in administration.

NIE- Director General, Prof Gunapala Nanayakkara said the related proposal will be submitted to the Minister of Education.

“There is not a single PhD holder among the principals. This is mainly because principals end up doing administration work of the school. There is a need to train graduates to help out principals in administration work,” he said.

According to him, in 1990, some 500 graduates were trained as Administrative Assistants.

“This system was not followed and eventually, they ended up being teachers. Such Administrative Assistants, will not only support the principals, but will ensure efficiency,” he said.

He said a request will be made for graduates recruited by the previous regime as Development Officers and presently not assigned any work.
