IUSF agitates against issues outside its syllabus
View(s):The Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) on Wednesday protested against a string of issues including privatising Higher Education, reduction in Mahapola Scholarship allowance and collecting monies in schools.
IUSF Convener, Najith Indika said, “This Government is no different.
President Maithiripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s joint government is carrying out what the previous government did.
“We tried to communicate several times regarding this issue, but there was no response from the government,” he declared.
However, Government claimed that an appointment had been granted to meet five of their representatives, and they had diverted the protest towards Temple Trees, from the original location of the University Grants Commission in Colombo 7.
The protest was dispersed off by the Police using tear-gas and water cannons.
The IUSF said that 24 undergrads were injured in the clash, of who 10 received serious injuries due to baton blows to their heads and legs, and were hospitalised.
Six Police constables were admitted in the Police hospital and an Inspector admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, and discharged two days later, claimed Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera.
“Further investigations are pending under the Colombo South SP Division, as more students were yet to be arrested,” he said.
