Citi Sri Lanka celebrates International Women’s day
The Oak Room of the Cinnamon Grand transformed into an evening of giggles, song and the loud, proud celebration of everything female as Citi Sri Lanka celebrated International Women’s Day. Although the celebration was almost two weeks after the official day commemorated on March 8, Citi, together with Mind Adventures theatre company put together an evening of theatre and joy, proving that you cannot limit women to just one day.
A simple platform constituted as the ‘stage’ for the play written and directed by Tracy Holsinger. Known for experimental theatre and their unique productions, Mind Adventures’ theme for the night was “Wonder Woman”. The cast screamed femininity in their pink outfits and strutted on to the stage while the nostalgic 70s’ “Wonder Woman” theme song rang out in the background. The satire took the audience back to the creation of the iconic, golden lasso swinging super hero and the ideals associated with women from the 1940s up to date.
The light hearted performance was a collection of skits, monologues and caricatures that had the audience; both women and the few brave men who attended erupting in laughter. While the performance was indeed relaxing for many after work on a Tuesday evening, Tracy and the cast made up of Tehani Chitty, Tracy Jayasinghe and Thanuja Jayawardene based their humorous pieces on real issues faced by the working woman of today. The physical and beauty ideals that constantly follow women and the impact of women on each other were some of the ideas explored. Using familiar characters from the conventional to the unconventional woman, the traditional, multi tasking and self valuing and a few males in the mix, ‘Wonder Woman’ reflected Citi’s theme for this year- “Connecting Women. Inspiring Change. Making Progress” .
