View(s):‘American Center’ films featuring how cinema captured highlights of American music history will be screened on 21 and 28 April at the American Cente American Center weekly film screening will showcase two cinematic creations relating to music ‘Walk the Line’ on April 21 and ‘Dreamgirls’ on April 28 at 6.00 pm at the AC auditorium at Colombo 3. Based on the early life and career of country music artiste Johnny Cash, Walk the Line is a 2005 American biographical drama film directed by James Mangold. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Robert Patrick, the film focuses on Cash’s early life, his romance with June Carter, and his ascent to the country music scene, as based on his autobiographies.
Previewed at the Telluride Film Festival on September 4, 2005, the film was nominated for five Oscars at the 78th Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Phoenix), Best Actress (Witherspoon, which she won), and Best Costume Design (Arianne Phillips). Directed by Bill Condon this 2006 American musical drama film is an adaptation from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name.
The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit, Michigan girl group known as the Dreams and their manipulative record executive. The film stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson, and also features Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson. Dreamgirls received a number of accolades, including three awards at the 64th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and two Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards.
