A drunken police constable was arrested by Galkiriyagama police for allegedly firing a T.56 weapon on Friday (17) at the temple where the Chief monk of Namal Uyana, Ven. Wanawasi Rahula Thera was residing.

The Chief monk had hid himself and escaped injuries, police said, adding that they have recovered empty shells from within the premises.

When produced for a medical examination, it was found that the constable was under the influence of liquor.

Wanawasi Thera said that the suspect, attached to the Galkiriyagama police, had been assigned for night duty at Namal Uyana. Though he was expected to report for duty at 6 pm, he had arrived at 6.45 pm, much to the displeasure of the Chief Priest.

The Chief monk said he was shot at because he scolded the constable for reporting late for duty.

The Thera, while in hiding, had called the Galkiriyagama police, amidst death threats from the constable.

The suspect is to be produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate.

Investigations were under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Anuradhapura, Athula Weerasinghe.
