Rules to govern sale of Buddhist flags and atapirikara

The government will issue on Tuesday standards for Buddhist flags sold in the open market and impose strict conditions on the quality of “atapirikara’ sold in the market, Public Administration Minister Karu Jayasuriya said.

“There is a standardised version of the Buddhist flag but some people have begun to modify it and sell it,” the Minister said.
The sale of “atapirikara” too will be standardised as it has been found that people were being hoodwinked by unscrupulous traders, he added.
Two separate gazette notifications will be issued on the standards. According to new regulations, failure to maintain proper standards will be liable to legal action.

The Consumer Affairs Authority this week seized 55,000 flags that did not conform to the standardised version. The sequence of colours on the flag had been mixed up.

Once the gazette notifications are issued, those selling atapirikara will be required to register with the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and display their registration number in public view.

They will also be required to display the SLS certificate when selling the products.

The Minister warned that those who violate the new regulations will have their goods confiscated.
