Two little lives lost in three -wheeler accidents
View(s):Three-wheelers continue to claim many lives in road accidents with the latest victims being two infants. On April 19, five-month-old Sandun from Waga died while traveling with his father and mother in a mobile ice cream-selling three-wheeler. The infant who sustained severe head injuries when the vehicle toppled, died at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital.
The child’s mother , 25 year old D.Priyadarshani told an inquest held by the Additional City Coroner Iresha Samaraweera at the Colombo Coroner’s Courts, that she was carrying the baby and traveling with her husband in the front seat of the three-wheeler.
“A speeding three-wheeler was coming towards us and I held my husband’s hand. Suddenly he lost control and the three-wheeler toppled. Though I was holding our baby, his head hit the ground. He was rushed to hospital but on the following day we were told that he had died while being treated at the ICU,” she said at the inquest.The post-mortem report said death was due to injuries to skull and excessive bleeding.
Additional City Coroner Ms. Samaraweera ordered Kosgama police to produce the 28-year-old father Saman Priyantha in courts on Tuesday. Another accident was reported in Tebuwana in Matugama where a 40-day old baby died when the three-wheeler it was traveling in toppled. The baby, who had not yet been named died on the spot while his 28-year-old father Tharindu Fernando, mother Wasanthi and grandmother were admitted to National Hospital, Matugama police said.
In more reported cases in recent weeks 10 year-old girl Pethum Lakshani died when the three-wheeler she was traveling in lost control and hit a nearby tree. She died at the Habarana Hospital while four adults who were traveling in the same vehicle were admitted to hospital with injuries. In the Marawila area a 33 year-old man died when the three- wheeler he was travelling in collided with a Mannar-bound SLTB bus from Colombo.
In the Welipitiya area, a 27 year old man was killed on the spot when the three-wheeler he was travelling in, lost control and hit a nearby wall. A 5- year-old resident from Grandpass, Colombo also died when the three-wheeler he was travelling in, lost control in the Lunugamvehera area in Hambantota. A speeding jeep from Anuradhapura hit a three-wheeler killing a 70-year-old woman in the Galgamuwa area recently. Galgamuwa police arrested the driver of the jeep.
