Programme to improve Reading habit among students, teachers

View(s):

The Education Ministry, in a bid to promote Reading among teachers and schoolchildren, will introduce a new programme in July, said Ministry Secretary Upali Marasinghe.

Under this programme, students and teachers will be provided with eight books to be used on a sharing basis.

The books will cover subjects such as History and Culture, and include a novel.

He said that, end of the year a contest will be organised where questions will be posed, based on the books, with teachers and students being rewarded.

“We notice that children concentrate mainly only on their text books and therefore, not into the habit of Reading. The purpose of this programme is to improve the Reading habit,” Mr Marasinghe said.

He said that teachers too need to improve their Reading habit.

He said the Education ministry hopes to continue with this programme. -
