‘Bombay Velvet’, one of the latest Bolywood films that was shot in Sri Lanka will be released at Majestic Ultra Cinema from May 15.

A story of an ordinary man who goes against all odds and forges his destiny to become a ‘big shot, the film is directed by Anurag Kashyap based on historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in lead roles with Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, Vivaan Shah and Siddharth Basu in supporting roles.

Set in Bombay of the 1960s, the film tells the story of a boxer, Johnny Balraj, and an aspiring jazz singer, Rosie, and how their hopes and dreams collide with their individual realities.

‘Bombay Velvet’s first schedule was shot at Ranmihitenna Tele Cinema village, Hambantota and the rest of the filming was done in locations in and around Colombo, Galle and Pasikudah in July, 2013. At the second schedule which also was shot at Ranminitenna Sharma and Kapoor rejoined the filming in February. The Indian producers had left certain parts of the set at the Ranminitenna National Tele Cinema village as a tourist attraction site. About ten days of shooting of the third and final schedule of the film was done in India.

The filmmaker was inspired to make such a film after reading L.A. Quartet, a sequence of four crime fiction novels by James Ellroy, set in the late 1940s through the late 1950s in Los Angeles. The novels inspired him to “dig into the dark trenches of the history of Bombay”, where he “found a treasure trove that was never-ending”.
