Ed.Min. to gazette guidelines for 2017 admissions to Govt. schools
View(s):The Education Ministry will gazette new guidelines for the admission of students to Government schools starting 2017, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariawasam.
“The new system will empower Principals to play a deciding role when admitting students, while a supervisory body too will be appointed to ensure no irregularities happen during admission,” he said.Under the new system, parents will be notified the reasons behind the rejection of their application.
The Minister elaborated that many students failed to gain admission due to disputes over house ownership, proof of residency in close proximity to the school, as well as the manner in which this proximity is calculated. These will be changed to make the system a fairer one, he added.
Education Ministry Secretary, Upali Marasinghe said the views of parents, principals and other interested groups will be sought before the new gazette is issued. “Grade 1 admissions for 2016 now under way, will also see minor changes to the system adapted under the previous government,” he added.
“We only planned for the 100-Day programme, hence, long term changes will take more time to finalise,” he added.
