It’s finance all the way
Cinnamon Grand Colombo held its inaugural Grand Inter Department Tag Rugby Sixes at the Thurstan College ground recently. Finance ‘A’ and Finance ‘B’ clashed for the finals at the first-ever championship, but the eventual result was a thrilling win for Finance ‘A’ team. After some fierce competition, Finance ‘A’ managed to lead the score board with 31 points to Finance ‘B’s 12 points. Marlon de Silva was named man of the tournament.
The tournament saw 13 teams representing various departments of the hotel partaking. Leaving behind their official uniforms, the Grand associates took to the field in their sports gear to the cheers of over 400 associates who came to encourage their colleagues. Kicking off the day’s activities, the Heads of Departments (HODs) played against the hotel’s Kitchen Stewarding, giving the win to the latter.
A key highlight of the day was the girl’s exhibition match between Rooms Division/Sales Vs Kitchen/F&B. The energetic Kitchen/F&B team won the match.
With the rain god holding back his rumble, the fun-filled day was made even more memorable with the large BBQ and burger section laid out in Grand fashion, grilling fresh meats for the participants, sportsmen and women alike. In true Cinnamon spirit, chefs of Cinnamon Lakeside came forward to assist in this endeavour. The two General Managers of the city properties, Cinnamon Lakeside and Cinnamon Red, Dermot Gale and Terrence Fernando respectively, also attended the tournament with their teams.
The successful organisation of the Grand Inter Department Tag Rugby Sixes was inspired by Sector Head — City Hotels Rohan Karr and led by Sector Head Human Resources — City Hotels Sujeeva Cooray who is also the HOD in charge for rugby; along with the Sports Committee comprising Vindya Rathnavibushana (Executive Housekeeper), Devinda Abeyweera, Chamila Thushara, Asthika Chandrapala, Luxman Perera, Keshara Prabath, Amila Makawita, John Ragu and D.P. Kumarasiri. Due to the high response, this event will be made an annual event, the Sports Committee said.
