Importance of a balanced diet

There are many challenges in our lives and to succeed in life we have to be healthy and fit. Having a balanced diet along with regular exercise is very important to achieve this goal.
A healthy balanced diet consists of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. The protein in our food helps us to grow. Carbohydrates give us energy to work and play. Fats also give us extra energy. Minerals like iron and calcium are essential for strong teeth, bones and hair. Vitamins protect us from diseases.
Having a balanced diet for all the three meals is important to all of us. A nutritious breakfast is vital for school children. A balanced diet gives the body strength and endurance. It keeps the body in good shape. It calms down our mind. With such a meal we can start the day well. It will kick start our mind and we can be active throughout the day.
I think that having a balanced diet is very important to us to lead a healthy life.

My holiday to the hillside

During the December holidays we went to Maskeliya. We travelled in a car. When we were in Avissawella my cousins also joined us on the trip. I was surprised when my cousins also joined us.
We went to Maskeliya and had lunch.
We played cricket in the evening. We could see Sri Pada but we couldn’t go there due to the bad weather. So we played monopoly in the night.
The next day after breakfast we went for a walk. My mother and grandmother went back quickly. We saw two waterfalls, an endemic bird and a beehive. When we came back it was ten o’clock. After that we bathed in a stream. Again we played cricket and monopoly.
The next day we went to Horton Plains.
I enjoyed the trip so much. I want to go there again.

Global Warming

Global Warming is a big problem all over the world. Earth’s surface is becoming hotter day by day, by trapping the sun’s heat. This is because of the rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere due to human activities such as burning of fossil fuels, emission from industries, destroying of forests.
Global warming creates several problems such as flooding, melting of ice, rise in sea level, hurricanes and spreading of epidemic diseases. As children we should understand this problem and do our best to save our beautiful planet.

If I had a magic wand

I had a magic wand but my mother is not letting me keep the magic wand. One morning at 6.30a.m., I was searching for my magic wand and at last I went to the old store room. There I saw the magic wand on top of the cupboard.
When I waved it in the air, a magic wagon appeared with lots of fairies in it. They took me to Fairyland. I was up in the sky and I touched the clouds. When we reached Fairyland, there were lots of other fairies, enormous butterflies, colourful and fragrant flowers, wonderful birds and a huge palace. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
After that I met a fierce fire dragon and I saw how the fairies fought on my behalf. After that I wished to go back home quickly before it was too late. I waved the magic wand in the sky and suddenly I was in the old store room again. My mother was there and she asked me where I came from. I told her that I came from Fairyland and I told the whole story to my mother. From that day she let me keep the magic wand.

Wilpattu Safari

One of our greatest National Treasures – the Wilpattu National Park is situated 185km away from Colombo in the North Western and North Central provinces.
A group of 21 family members including myself decided to visit it during the April holidays.
We stayed over at Hotel Alakamanda in Anuradhapura and made our way towards the park for the Safari in the evening. The safari jeeps were waiting for us. There were three. My cousins, siblings and I got into one.

The park is 131,693 hectares and ranges from 0 – 152 metres above sea level. There are nearly 60 lakes (Willu) and tanks spread throughout Wilpattu.
It is known to house leopards, sloth bears, water buffaloes and elephants.
We saw many species of mammals, birds, insects and reptiles. The highlight of the safari was when the jeep went in and out of the little lakes. We enjoyed visiting one of the oldest and largest national parks in Sri Lanka.

Globalization is good
Globalization is that the world becomes a single village. It is a good thing. It helps us to connect with the world by surpassing geographical distance through communication and transportation which are results of globalization.
People can work together with all other countries and societies. They can work in harmony as the whole world is one village.
There are many social, cultural, economical and political benefits by globalization. Improvement of international trade, labour market and emergence of new employment opportunities are good results of globalization. The economy of a country can be built up by globalization. It is clear that tourism industry is a main influence to the economy of a country.
Many scientific revolutions can be seen within the development of globalization. Many technologies are developed in the world as a result of collective creations of scientists and physicians of many countries.
There are thousands of organizations, committees, societies and clubs among countries and they discuss solutions to problems that arrive within cultural, political, social and economical sections. As they find collective solutions together we can solve problems within a country easily.
People in the whole world are doing communication, transportation and tourism by surpassing their culture, language, socials, religions, colour, thoughts and traditions through globalization. Therefore we can say the globalization is good.

Admiring nature
Last Sunday all our family members went to Galgamuwa church. After lunch we walked here and there admiring the beauty of nature. Twilight was white and it lasted for a long while. The sky became a curious blue-green that soon fade to white. The trees were slowly darkening. It was the hour when sparrows gathered and whirled above the rooftops. We heard the voices of children and the whir of a lawnmower from a yard somewhere.

A toothpaste speaks
I am a little tube of pure, white toothpaste. I was made in a big factory in Colombo. I have many brothers and sisters. One day, a person came and put me and my brothers and sisters into a large box and we were carried to a
super luxury market by a lorry.
I had to stay there for a couple of weeks. One day, a woman came and bought me and I was taken to her home.

Now I am happy in my new home on a nice glass shelf.
My friend is a little toothbrush. We belong to a little girl called Mihashi. She uses us twice a day. She puts the paste on the tooth brush and then she scrubs her nice white teeth until they shine. I think Mihashi likes me, as I have such a nice taste.

An unforgettable cricket match
My friends and I decided to have a cricket match among the Grade 5 students. We planned to have it in the last school vacation. First we got the permission to play the match in the secondary ground and we conveyed this message to our parents. They were very happy. They also came to witness and cheer the cricket match.
Our parents brought lots of refreshments and trophies for us. The P.T. teachers from both Primary and Secondary schools came to help us. The contribution of our school cricket coach made us more encouraged about the game. We enjoyed playing the match for a couple of hours. It helped us to make a strong relationship among the students and our parents too. It was an unforgettable day in my life.
