Showcasing the best of local and international culinary expertise, the Culinary Art Food Expo 2015 will come alive at the Sirimavo Bandaranike Memorial Exhibition Centre at BMICH on July 24, 25 and 26.

Organised by the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka, with CDC Events as the professional event organiser, this year’s Culinary Art Food Expo will comprise two segments – a culinary art competition and a exhibition segment.

The Culinary Art Competition will see the participation of local and foreign chefs who will battle it out for the honours under various categories such as practical live categories, static display categories, etc. This year’s Culinary Art Competition has received over 2500 entries.

According to the current President of the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka Dimuthu Kumarasinghe, the competition will provide great exposure for participants to showcase their creativity, to gain exposure into the industry as well as to discover opportunities in the international arena.
Chef Dimuthu said, having first taken part in the Culinary Art Competition as an amateur in 1990, the event opened up many avenues for him locally and abroad after he was chosen as Best Chef in the Culinary Art Competition in 1993. Dimuthu, who is currently the Group Chef for Aitken Spence has secured a world record at the Culinary Olympics held in Germany in 2004, bagging five Gold Medals, competing against chefs from 56 countries. He has also represented Sri Lanka at many prestigious culinary art events abroad.

The second segment of the event which is the trade exhibition on Hospitality, Food, Processed Food and Packaging will have over 150 stalls to display the products and services from the time of processing to consuming. Being the only exhibition in Sri Lanka to display under one roof, processed food, food, packaging and hospitality, the event creates a forum for those involved in the hospitality industry to come together to share their expertise, new trends and ideas.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Chairman of the Chefs Guild Lanka who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Culinary Art Food Expo 2105, Gerard Mendis said the event has grown from strength to strength since its inception.

“In the past, prominence was given to the culinary side but due to the growing nature of the event, we have expanded it to the industry as well. The event is one location where food processors, manufacturers, importers and all others could meet together,” he said adding that it will also provide a great experience for the public- consumers, housewives, chefs , school students studying home science etc to gain an insight into the world of culinary art.
