Nilan’s Arpeggio performs in Malaysia
View(s):A two day show including a Buddhist ballet and a Sri Lankan traditional drums show was performed by award winning choreographer Nilan Maligaspe’s Arpeggio Creative Dance and Drama Academy (ACDDA) during the Vesak celebration in Malaysia recently.
Nilan and his team performed his ballet ‘Abhinikmana’ at Selangor State Vesak Celebration 2015 at Auditorium Jubli Perakm at Selangor on May 9 and drums performance were shown at Empire hotel Kualalampur and at One City Mall at Selangor during International Performing Arts Festival organised by Suban Jaya Municipal Council on May 10.
‘Abhinikmana’ is the 11th ballet produced by Nilan’s ACDDA. One of the few ballet directors in the country, Nilan’s ‘Lovers of Thambapanni’ based on Kuweni-Vijaya story won five awards including the Best Ballet, the Best Stage Designing, the Best Actor, the Best Actress and the Best Music at the State Ballet Festival 2014.
Maligaspe, a dramatist, choreographer and a photo journalist from the Sunday Times won awards at the festival organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Arts Council and it was held under the patronage of the former President Chandrika Kumaranatunge.
The awards were won by Predeep Guneratne, Chaturi Perera, Sanjeeva Paranemanne and Maligaspe himself. Maligaspe who has run his dancing academy for the last 21 years has produced a number of ballets. His latest ballet ‘Thambapanni’ was performed at Indian MIMC Festival and it was coordinated by Maha Bodhi Institute. Plans are underway to perform ‘Abiniskramanaya’, Nilan’s other ballet in Malaysia. - Bandula Nonis
