Aid for Batticaloa Teaching Hospital
View(s):More than 15,000 patients sought help at the casualty room of the Teaching Hospital in Batticaloa last year – the great majority of them victims of motor vehicle and work place accidents.
Proper treatment of these people requires more than just a casualty room. What is needed in the ‘ golden hour’ to save a life or a limb is state of the art diagnostic and resuscitation equipment, quick action in the surgery and careful monitoring at the recovery rooms.
The objective of the Ministry of Health, with support from organisations such as the Foundation Supporting a National Trauma Service in Sri Lanka is to raise awareness for the need for such Trauma units and A&E hospitals throughout regional Sri Lanka in the Public Hospital network.
The Batticaloa Hospital will follow Karapitiya near Galle as the forerunners of this plan.
Project BEAP has the support of a number of major corporations in Sri Lanka who are donating for this ‘public/private not for profit venture’. They include SLT, John Keells, Asiri Hospital Holdings, Brandix, Tokyo Cement, Baurs, Penguin Group, Life Insurance Company of India. Several Australian companies and individuals have also supported the project thus far.
More funding is required by the Foundation to fulfil its pledge of USD$2 million for the construction and a further USD$1 million for equipment. Sri Lankan companies wishing to help may donate for the project via the National Health Development Fund to and gain tax deduction or CSR credits.
