The no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will not be taken up during the coming week’s Parliament sittings, the Sunday Times learns. The motion was handed over to the Secretary General of Parliament on Friday.

The motion signed by 112 MPs would be first translated into Tamil and English and placed in the Order Book where it should remain for at least five days before being included in the Order Paper of Parliament, sources said. In the motion, the signatories charge that Mr. Wickremesinghe is holding the post of Prime Minister without seeking a mandate from Parliament, violating the Police Ordinance and using the Police to victimise political opponents.

They also accuse him of failing to arrest the rising cost of living and stalling big projects and thereby causing job losses for many people in the construction sector. Appointing a foreign national to the post of Central Bank Governor is another charge mentioned in the motion.

Parliament will meet on Tuesday and MPs are expected to endorse the nominations for the ten-member Constitutional Council this week.
