Vesak at the UN
View(s):Sri Lanka and Thailand co-sponsored the Veask Day celebrations at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Sri Lanka Permanent representative Dr. Rohan Perera co-chaired the event with Thailand’s envoy Virachai Plasai. Also present on the podium was Ambassador Lyutha Al-Mughairy, Acting President of the UN General Assembly.
Vesak is observed at the UN following a resolution moved by the then Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. By its resolution 54/115 of 1999, the General Assembly recognised internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution Buddhism has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spiritual progress of humanity.
