Abdul Kalam to preside over international conference on energy and power this month
View(s):Former Indian President and scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is to preside at the international power and energy conference, titled “Energy for a knowledge based economy”, to be held in Colombo on June 26 and 27. On June 8 Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka officially invited Dr. Kalam for the conference at the Delhi residence of the latter.
Speaking at the meeting with Minister Ranawaka Dr. Kalam has said knowledge based economies in ancient civilizations like India and Sri Lanka, have become part of its historical traditions. Speaking further the eminent Indian scientist said the world faces grave environmental issues due to the execess use of oil, coal and gas to produce energy.
He said that in the future, alternative sources will need to be sought such as hydropower, wind power and solar power. He added that society would then need to be prepared for such changes. Dr. Kalam said he is quite happy to accept the invitation.
Minister Ranawaka during the meeting with Dr Kalam had said individuals need to change their mindsets in terms of development. He said the legacy of environment-friendly practices enshrined in religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism should be restored and put into use. “The visit of the eminent Indian scholar will help in these endeavours,” the Minister said.
