The 42nd All-Island Schools Age Group Aquatic and Relay Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association (SLSASA) and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd for the 22nd year will get underway at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium swimming pool from June 18 onwards.

The four day championship scheduled to end on June 21 will see both boys and girls contesting in the age groups of Under-9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. This was revealed by Krishan Duminda, Vice President of the SLSASA at a press briefing held at the CR and FC auditorium.

The organisers have received entries from 165 schools which comprise of 2563 in the boys and 1625 in the girls’ categories. The entries from the boys school is 80 with 50 from the girls’ and 35 from mixed schools.Entries received from schools at provincial level are Western (69), Central Province (50), Southern (20), Sabaragamuwa (14), Uva (12), North Central (15) and Wayamba (10).

The championships will see the participants competing in 164 events with 140 in the individual and 24 in the relay events. The number of relay teams in boys’ category is 270 with 165 in the girls’ category.There are a total number of 16 trophies up for grabs while certificates will be presented to the first eight in the swimming events and the first three in the relay events.

St. Joseph’s Colombo and Mahamaya College Kandy have been the champions for the last three years in the boys and girls categories and they will be seeking to make a repeat performance as they posses talented and strong contingents.

Jayantha Gamage, President of Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports will be the chief guest at the opening day ceremonies while President Maithripala Sirisena will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony with Shivani Hedge, Managing Directress of Nestle Lanka as the guest of honour. – MSA
