Waive interest on pawned jewellery – Letter

View(s):

Under its 100 day programme, the Government in power had pledged to waive the interest on pawned articles worth up to Rs. 200,000 but this is not being implemented as yet. The people who visit banks with great expectation in redeeming their pawned articles without paying interest are disappointed when the bank officials confess that they haven’t received any circulars to do so from the Ministry of Finance or the Central Bank.

The UNP Ministers in power boast at press conferences and in public meetings that they have fulfilled all their election pledges during the 100 day programme and they are now prepared for a general election. They should evaluate what has been done and not done during this brief tenure in office without hoodwinking the masses.  I most sincerely urge the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister to look into this matter and implement the proposal as promised.
