‘Ira Sevaya’ the latest film by veteran journalist, lyricist and teledrama director Rodney Vidanapathirana is now being screened at National Maharagama.  A Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom co-production, the film which revolves around a wealthy aristocrat who dreams of entering politics despite opposition by his own family shows how the elite class tries to maintain its social status by joining the political bandwagon.

The film produced by Kanthi Alahakone, is also the cinematic creation in which talented actress Rebecca Nirmalee played her last performance. Others in the cast include Wimal Alahakone, Maureen Charuni, Ishara Wickremasinghe, Stanley Krisharathna, Gamini Samarakone, Tissa Bandaranayake, Wilman Sirimanna, Malani Kathirasinghe and Ranjith Ranasinghe.

‘Ira Sevaya’ is edited by Viranga Katapearachchi and Madura Prasad. Art direction is by Ranjith Ranasinghe, make up by Narada Thotagamuwa and Manoj Peiris directed the musical score while Kithsiri Jayasekara and Chandraratne Ileperuma did the playback. Story, screenplay and direction of the film is by Rodney Vidanapathirana.

Nalaka Sapumal Bandara, (Wimal Alahakone) hailing from an aristocratic backdrop is having a complicated marriage life. The reason for this is his wife Yvonne (Maureen Charuni) who is suffers from a permanent ailment. At times she gets mentally imbalanced and behaves strangely. The biggest obstacle for Nalaka’s dream to enter politics is his wife who strongly opposes it. However Yvonne commits suicide.

Following the death of his wife Nalaka decides to enter politics and he also falls in love with Lorain (Rebecca Nirmalee) who lives as a mistress of one of his own subordinates. In the meantime Nalaka suffers with a kidney failure and needs to undergo a kidney transplant. A young novice monk who enters the Sasana agrees to donate his kidney to Nalaka. After the transplant Nalaka goes to London with Lorrain and there they decide to go back to Sri Lanka and make considerable financial donations to the monk who now lives in a forest. Nalaka’s main aim is to become popular through this donation. But Lorrain has separate plans together with her paramour. Unfortunately the monk who is determined to achieve greater spiritual heights in his life becomes a part of the wicked plans of Nalaka and Lorain.
