Girls of the Girls’ Friendly Society Hostel took to the catwalk at the “May Breeze” coffee morning held in aid of the development of the GFS Hostel for working girls, at the GFS Hall last month. They modelled exclusive fusion wear – sarees and kurta tops combining the traditional Sri Lanka crafts of handloom, beeralu and shadow work – designed by Annie, Priyani and the girls of Dickwella and Kandy.

The Girls’ Friendly Society set up the Hostel in 1957 to provide safe, basic accommodation for young girls from the outstations coming to Colombo for employment. For the past 58 years the hostel has assisted hundreds of girls to live, work, study and build successful careers and then move on, enabling others to take their place. In recent years the demand for such accommodation has increased and the Society plans to develop the present hostel facilities so that more girls could benefit.
