Jaffna Warriors impress
The first season of the EFLI-Sri Lanka University Flag American Football League 2015 kicked off yesterday at Longdon Place with the day producing some stellar runs and quality long range passes proving that Sri Lanka truly has the agility and skill to reach great heights in this game. Teams coming from all parts of Sri Lanka and the two teams from Jaffna were cut above the rest, being total newcomers to the sport.
Both Jaffna teams had a superb day crushing their opponents. The Jaffna coach Kularanthinam was confident about his team and claimed that his team was the biggest threat to all those present. He backed up his confidence with two stunning wins yesterday. Another force to be reckoned with were the lads from Lahore, Pakistan, the Peshawar Wolfpak and the students of the University of Sargodha from India. From the local universities commendable performances came from Kotalawela Defence Academy Rifles and NIBM Wildcats.
The CR&FC grounds, which normally plays host to rugby matches hosted 16 university teams, 14 local and two foreign as the competition will resume today with the Shield segment games. Former CR&FC three-quarter and well renowned Rugby referee Dilroy Fernando, the Director of EFLI – Sri Lanka is playing a huge role in inculcating the sport into Sri Lankan blood.
The participating teams are NIBM Wildcats, NIBM Bees, KDU Rifles, KDU Colts, KDU ‘C’, Jaffna Warriors, Jaffna Eagles, NSBM Storms, NSBM Thunders, IIT Dragons, IIT Griffins, IIT Panthers, BMS Tornados, Rajarata Bulls, Peshawar Wolfpak and University of Sargodha. The tournament ends today.
