Future of everything and anything is technology, says top Google official
Examining the lifestyle and the evolution of technology 100 years back and how it has advanced until today shows how phenomenal it has been. This is not just going to end here but will keep on developing and advancing. Technology is something that cannot be predicted who will do what, when and where. No one knows what could be the next development in technology within the next four to five years, says Rajan Anandan, Vice President and Managing Director of Google South East Asia and India.
Mr. Anandan, who is of Sri Lankan origin, during a recent visit to one of the top IT companies in Sri Lanka, Millennium IT in Malabe, shared his views and experience about the tech world and spoke of some of the technologies that could drive the world in future, with the employers of the company.
With a broad knowledge of how technology developed and reached the consumers, with accurate figures, he explained that landline telephones took 110 years to reach from zero to billion consumers around the world. Similarly when television, mobile phones, Internet and smartphones were invented in the same order it took 49, 22, 14 and 8 years respectively, to reach a billion consumers from zero. Every time when something new was invented it took half the time it took to reach the consumers, which clearly shows that people are getting connected via technology.
Additionally, Anandan also mentioned that out of seven billion people in the world, today three billion are connected to the Internet. “Google is trying to connect the balance four billion people using balloons which is a latest innovation of Google kept under experimentation. This technology is focused to provide Internet to the rural areas and areas where signals could not be transmitted.”
Mr. Anandan also pointed out that new innovations are disruptive to businesses. But all the new innovations help people ease life in so many ways. Technology that disrupts businesses leads to further advancement in the industry. “There are so many IT companies that have reached milestones in a short time such as Xiaomi, a Chinese IT company that was considered the fastest growing company in the world realising a revenue of US$5 billion in less than five years doing business via online. In China 300 million people out of 600 million do all transactions via online. Also companies from other industries like Uber, Weathfront and Slack have reached great targets within a short time,” said Mr. Anandan.
Predicting about what could happen to the future of technology, he said that all industries are going to be fundamentally reinvented with new innovations to tap and overcome the current market. He said some countries do not allow some of the new applications due to privacy issues which is a big challenge for the IT companies.
