A court complex held in contempt
The Nuwara Eliya Magistrate Courts building has been in a dilapidated state for two years. Though it is reported that Rs. 3.5 million has been set apart for its renovation, the dilapidated state of the building does not appear to have caught the attention of the authorities.
The building is nearly 50 years old.
In May 31 2009 the then Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva opened a new courts complex nearby to house the High Courts, District Courts and the Labour Tribunal.
The walls of this new courts complex was expanded to encompass the Magistrate Courts as well, though the Magistrate’s Court itself was in need of repairs.
Subsequently the building was repaired, but it is currently in a bad state of disrepair.
Whenever it rains, the roof leaks. Rain water flows into the building through the entrance. Instances of litigants losing their balance on the slippery floor too have been reported.
The construction of the building itself is such that the inside of the Courts is dark. This problem is made worse during power cuts while court is in progress.
