‘Ayubowan’ to Colombo’s newest health clinic Absolute Ayurveda
Opening their inviting- looking wooden doors, Absolute Ayurveda bid ‘Ayubowan’ as the newest health clinic offering traditional healing last week. With the aim of catering to those who would generally opt for “Western medicine” and those visiting the country Absolute Ayurveda “is not a spa” according to Director, Shalin Balasuriya. Set in a quiet, colonial building down Alfred Place, the Centre is overseen by five qualified doctors.
Generally you have to do a lot of homework, when resorting to Ayurvedic cures which involve the tedious task of finding, measuring and mixing ingredients. The in-house pharmacy at their latest facility is a way around this, says Shalin, and treatments are created as per individual prescriptions.
The prescriptions follow a comprehensive check-up by the resident doctor who will then let a consultant continue the course of treatment required as per the diagnosis. Chief Physician Dr. Danister Perera who has over 25 years of experience in traditional healing says there are chiefly “two types of treatments.” The take-home medication is custom made for each patient rather than a patient’s ailment being matched with an off the shelf, mass produced variety.
Over the years there has been increased interest in Ayurvedic methods according to Dr. Danister. “There are a lot of eminent names in the world of science, submitting papers re-affirming what Ayurveda has already known” be it patient care, or the general holistic approach to wellness.
“We are also trying to control chronic illnesses,” he says. This category, being the most common in today’s fast-paced world poses the highest number of health issues from migraine to the more complicated like diabetes and hypertension.
Taking the wisdom accumulated over centuries ago, Absolute Ayurveda hopes to bring this 5000-year heritage up to date. They are geared to do this aided by state of the art devices, which are a first in the country. Better temperature control and consistent monitoring of therapy is made possible in an exclusive yet homely setting by the equipment. “What people tend to forget” according to Shalin, is that “Ayurveda is constantly evolving,” and “Absolute Ayurveda reflects this in every aspect.”
