Cargills Bank is implementing a foreign remittance service with a difference providing unique facilities for Sri Lankans working abroad to send money to their families, officials of the bank said. Foreign remittance recipients will be able to collect money from any of the 270 Cargills Food City outlets countrywide which are open 365 days from 8.00am to 10.00 pm daily or from the three Cargills Bank branches under this scheme, they revealed.

This remittance service also allows recipients to pay their bills and purchase essential commodities and consumer goods at 5 per cent discount on a grocery bill when they visit the outlet for remittance withdrawals, Deputy General Manager Marketing Rumaiz Rahim told Business Times. Remittance pay-out counters have been opened at Cargills Food City outlets making it as one-stop shops for remittance recipients.

Sri Lankan expatriates specially in the Middle East are now being able to send money to their families after their work hours using this facility as the food city outlets are opened till 10.00 pm daily.The remittance pay out service has been launched recently with the intention of providing a quality and convenient service to Sri Lankan workers overseas while recognising their contribution towards bringing much needed foreign exchange to the island nation, he disclosed.

“Although the bank is new in this arena, our accounts holders have placed their trust and confidence in us and they have the feeling that their money is safe and secure with us because of the trust and confidence of Sri Lankans on Cargills (Ceylon) PLC, the parent company of the bank,” he said.

The bank has linked up with Xpress Money and Cash Express which have branches all over the Middle East and other countries.
Sri Lankan expatriates could remit the money from any of these branches to their family members ‘at a lower cost and the recipients will be able to collect remittances even during late hours from Food City outlets even when banks are not normally open for business, Buddhika Perea, head of operations of the bank told Business Times. Recipients will be informed by the sender that money has been remitted and a pin number sent which could be used to withdraw the funds from Cargills.

He noted that Food City staff has also been given extensive training to handle transactions while the bank head office will carry out major functions including the back office of the work.
