Pawns and Kings battle it out at Waskaduwa
View(s):Chess Federation of Sri Lanka will be organising the Asian Cities Chess Championship 2015 to be held at the Citrus Hotel Waskaduwa from July 21 to 29 for the prestigious Dubai Cup.
In this biggest Chess event for the year organised on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation, already sixteen teams — India, Mongolia, Brunei, Afghanistan, Chinese Taipei, Kyrgyz Republic, Malaysia, UAE, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Maldives, Taiwan, Palestine, Iran, China and hosts Sri Lanka will be taking part.
Each team will consist of five players with a reserve and they will be playing with a name of a city of their countries where India, UAE and Sri Lanka will field two teams each. Sri Lanka team will consist of 10 top players from the National Chess Championship and will be represented under the names of Colombo and Kandy.
Dulan Edirisinghe, the National Chess Champion 2015 will lead the Colombo city team consisting of players in the calibre of International Romesh Weerawardena, G.C. Anuradha, Chamil Priyankara and Dineth Naotunna. Former National Chess Champion Isuru Alahakoon leads the Kandy team which includes T.S.S. Peiris, Minul Doluweera and Sasith Nipun Piyumantha. The two Indian teams will play in the names of Bangalore and Calicut while the UAE team will be playing under the names of Dubai and Abudhabi.
The opening ceremony will be held at 2.30 p.m. on the 22nd July and the closing ceremony to be held on July 28 at 4.00 p.m. at the same venue, the Citrus Hotel, Waskaduwa.
