The German Embassy in Colombo has granted assistance worth over Rs. 10 million to eight community development organisations operating in a number of districts. The projects cover livelihood support, education, water and sanitation.

Seen here is a well being constructed in Trincomalee as part of the German Embassy's micro projects initiative.

In meetings with representatives of the implementing organisations to hand over the funds, Ambassador Dr. Juergen Morhard was quoted in a media release as saying, “The micro projects initiative is a key component of Germany’s engagement with local communities. Our interest is in supporting people to achieve a better quality of life through assistance that has a direct, long-term impact. And our community partners ensure that the embassy’s outreach programme helps the most deserving.”

Dairy farming projects will be carried out in Ampara, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee and will help up to 60 individuals and families. Assistance will also go towards improving the efficiency and productivity of eight clay pottery businesses, headed by women in Yatiyana, Matara.

The embassy is financing projects to provide safe drinking water in Trincomalee and Vavuniya districts through the construction of wells that will service over 150 resettled families.  In the area of education support, the embassy through two partner organisations, is funding the renovation of pre-school building in Galle and the islands off the Jaffna peninsula.

Every year, Germany provides up to Rs.12 million worth of funding through its micro project scheme, as part of efforts to enhance the capacities and living standards of the Sri Lankan people.
