Good Manners

As school children we must learn good manners. We must always try  to be well-mannered persons.
Good manners are essential to live  in a good society.

When we meet someone, we must greet them by saying, ‘Good Morning’ or ‘Good Afternoon’. We must greet them with a smile. When someone offers to help us we must say ‘Thank you very much’. That is to show our gratitude. If we want to speak to someone who is very busy, we must say, ‘Excuse me’. When we have hurt someone by an oversight, we must say, ‘I’m very sorry’.

We must respect our parents, our teachers and our elders. We must not look down upon the poor and the weak. We must always help them. We should appreciate the talents of others. That would be a great encouragement for the person. When teachers come to the classroom we must all stand up and greet them.

Only well-mannered people can be good citizens.

My mother
My mother is the person I admire. She works hard to bring success in our life. A mother is a gift for every child.
My mother is Aaisha Banu.
She wakes up early in the morning and prepares food for us to take to school. My mother guides my sister and me in the right path. She teaches us good manners and discipline. She helps us in our studies. We should respect our mothers.’ I love my mother.

A visit to a village
We visited a village which was very far from Colombo. I went there with my family members. On the way, we saw big trees, small tress, bushes, waterfalls and mountains. We saw many birds in the trees. There were beautiful waterfalls. The water was flowing down from the rocks. We felt very happy. There were very few houses. A river was flowing beside the road. The mountains were far away. The paddy-fields made the surrounding beautiful.
We stayed in a house in the village for two days and returned home. I enjoyed my trip and holiday. I want to go to the village again.

How we can preserve a clean and beautiful environment
Our environment is our surroundings. Our environment is affected by man’s actions in negative ways that include deforestation, acid rain, water pollution  and the improper disposal of waste.

To keep our environment clean we can practice the three R’s which are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We can reuse things such as biscuit tins to store food. We can recycle things such as paper, glass and aluminium. Another way to preserve our environment is Reforestation. When  people cut trees, global warming occurs. When fossil fuels are burnt, carbon dioxide is released into the air. This traps the heat from the sun. This causes the ice caps to melt and low lying countries to sink.

When trees are cut down, the oxygen in the atmosphere reduces. To prevent this we can practice reforestation by planting plant saplings. To stop improper disposal of waste, dustbins should be kept at roads, parks, schools and other places. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged into bodies of water. Factories release toxic waste into rivers and oil tankers leak oil into oceans. Air pollution occurs when harmful chemicals are released into the air. Motor vehicles also release many pollutants into the air. When harmful gases from the burning of fossil fuels are dissolved in rain water, acid rain is formed.

I wish that we could keep our environment clean. Keeping the environment clean is good for our own health.

Feathered friends who visit our garden
Since we have a large garden, several types of birds come to our garden to feed and play. The largest number of birds who visit us are yellow-billed Babblers, known as Demalichchas. They usually come in groups of about seven, sometimes accompanied by a squirrel.
Two Pigeons also come to our home garden. They usually stay on surfaces without grass. A pair of Mynah birds feed on insects and seeds in the grass. A number of Cuckoo birds perch on small trees and bushes. Sometimes a lone Kingfisher with bright blue feathers sits on a telephone wire.
Of all the birds who visit us, my favourite and the prettiest are the tiny Sun birds. They are also called Hummingbirds. Their feathers are a brilliant blue and green. They use their long beaks to drink nectar from flowers.
I enjoy watching the feathered friends who visit our home garden.

Trees

Trees are big. They are useful. Trees give us many things. They give us food, shade and medicine. Plants produce oxygen. In every garden, there are trees. We have to protect trees.

My holiday
My school gave me a holiday on April 9. Then my mother and father decided to go to India.
On April 12, we went to India (Chennai). We went to Saravana Stores to buy dresses and I went to Pothys Shopping Centre and bought shoes. I went to M.G.M. Dizze World and there we can play in water. We went on a roller coaster and we can play games. It got late so we went home.
After two days I went to the beach and we enjoyed there. In India I learned lots of games. Next day I came to Sri Lanka.
I enjoyed my holiday very much.

A doctor
Everyone needs a job to improve their lives and be happy. I like to be a doctor when I grow up. A doctor does a great service for the people in the world. It is a service rather than just a job and a doctor is respected by all.
He or she gives valuable advice and suitable medicines when someone is ill. A doctor has to be responsible for his/her patients and the wards he/she is in charge of. A doctor also needs to have a good education, strength, courage, kindness, patience and good bedside manners too.
Doctors are mainly responsible for treating and healing of patients but in order to do so, they have to first undergo a training at the Medical Faculty for about five or six years before practicing in a hospital. Many difficult operations are performed by them. Some of them become surgeons. Doctors face lots of difficulties when treating incurable diseases and handling patients.
No matter how hard it is, I’m going to try my best to become a doctor in the future.
