Voters can claim poll cards even on election day: Post Master General
Post Offices islandwide will remain open till 4 p.m. today to enable voters who have not received their polling cards to collect them from their respective post offices, a senior official of the Postal Department said. They can do so on Monday, the day of the poll as well, Post Master General D.L.P Rohana Abeyratne said.
He explained that all polling cards could not be delivered to homes as the householders were not present when they were taken for distribution. Mr. Abeyratne stated that, 97 percent of the polling cards have been delivered. “Special days were allocated for the distribution of the polling cards. There were nearly 8,500 postmen on duty island wide,” he said.
Those who have not received their polling cards have to produce their National Identity Card at the post office, to prove their identity and obtain them, he said. However not being in possession of a polling card is not a bar to casting one’s vote but an identity card is essential, he said.
The voters who do not have polling cards may go to their polling stations with the national identity card, driver’s licence, a passport, the public service pensioners’ identity card or the identity card for elderly citizens issued by the Divisional Secretary or the identity card for clergymen issued by the Registration of Persons Department, to cast their vote.
