View(s):fatally run overAn assistant engineer supervising work at a construction site on Leslie Ranagala Mawatha, Borella was run over and killed by a teenager driving a three-wheeler, a coroner’s court heard yesterday. The deceased, 54-year-old Thilak Dharmasiri Samaratunga a father to two from Pussellarupe in Deniyaya who was employed by the Colombo Municipal Council had been working with 10 other employees at the site where they were constructing a road. It was while he was working that the three-wheeler driven by a 15-year-old crashed into him last Friday.
He was rushed to the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries yesterday morning.Giving evidence before M. Ashroff Rumi, the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Sajith Lakshantha Samaratunga (22), the son of the dead man, said he received news that his father was involved in an accident. “I rushed to the hospital. My father was in the ICU but he couldn’t talk,” the son said.
Borella Police Sub Inspector W. M. Senanayake said the driver of the three-wheeler was remanded. Concluding that the death was caused by injuries caused by the three-wheeler crashing into the victim, Mr. Rumi ordered the police to produce the driver in the coroner’s court on October 4.
