Safety of Lankans visiting Thailand assured despite blast: Envoy
View(s):Thailand’s Ambassador Nopporn Adchariyavanich has assured the safety of Sri Lankans wishing to travel to the country, following this week’s blast. Speaking to the Sunday Times, the Envoy stated that Thai Police had secured the area and are taking every measure to apprehend the perpetrators. He added that the Thailand’s Prime Minister had offered his condolences to the related families and will provide every care to them in these troubled times.
Nearly 20 persons were killed while 125 sustained injuries following a bomb explosion near the Erawan Hindu shrine in downtown Chidlom district, Bangkok, on Monday. The authorities are attributing the blast as an attempt to tarnish the country’s image and disrupt it’s economy.
“The Government of Thailand appreciates the condolence sent by President Maithripala Sirisena to the King of Thailand,” the Ambassador said. Nearly 70,000 Sri Lankans visit the country annually. The embassy processes nearly 300 applications on a daily basis, the Sunday Times learns.
Despite the blast, visa applications keep coming in, the Ambassador said, adding they had received 400 applications on Tuesday (18), the day after the blast.
