IELTS, considered the world’s most popular English language tests, has been well established in Sri Lanka during the past 26 years since its inception. The demand for this exam is increasing while visas for countries like UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand require the IELTS exam (pass) as a must before entering the country as an immigrant.

British Council Country Director Keith Davies made this statement to the Business Times on the sidelines of the IELTS Partner Forum held at the Hilton Residencies in Colombo recently. In order to recognise the performance of IELTS registration centres across Sri Lanka, the British Council rewarded its partners. ICBT Campus won ‘Partner of the Year’ for the fourth consecutive year. Regional award winners included ICBT City Campus, British College of English and Headway School of Languages.

Two other schemes were also introduced at the event, the British Council IELTS Scholarship Scheme for students and the ADDvantage scheme for partners. The British Council IELTS Scholarship Scheme is a programme aimed at IELTS candidates of the British Council hoping to study in UK, USA and Australia. These scholarships are worth £3,000 each and will be offered to three students.

ADDvantage scheme is offered to partners and it includes a number of benefits including a membership certificate recognising the partnership, access to the British Council’s promotional material including posters, leaflets and brochures, an online IELTS registration facility through the British Council registration website and much more.

IELTS is accepted by more than 9,000 organisations in over 145 countries and is the stepping stone to help many young people achieve their aspirations. Some 2.2 million IELTS tests are held globally every year.

The British Council offers a range of study support free of charge for candidates who wish to take the IELTS test. The support options include a practice workbook, a 30-hour online preparation course, an IELTS seminar and access to the English Learning Zone of the British Council library.

The UK qualifications and assessments provided by the British Council have changed the lives of people, enabling them to study or work overseas. In addition to providing the exams and supporting candidates directly, support is also offered to schools and organisations. (RM)
