G.K. Supun Sanjeewa Kumara would often mull over a sight he saw daily while driving past Nagoda in Kalutara -a huddle of little wattle and daub huts with only oil lamps to provide light to its inmates.

…and there was light. Thanks to electrician cum inventor Supun Sanjeewa Kumara a whole settlement is now lit up

Supun, who lives in Kuda Payagala, is an electrician with a bent for inventing things. After discussing with his wife, Dilini Indika, friends Pritiraj, Jeewaka, ‘Patty Malli’ and others, the young electrician was able to create ten circuits to generate solar power electricity, which he donated to the ten families occupying the modest homes.

G.M. Dayawathie, whose house was illuminated due to Supun’s efforts, was very thankful. “Even a solidly built house was a dream for us, let alone electricity. My husband is dead; we eke out a living with much difficulty.” Her sentiment, “pin siddawenawa” was echoed by inmates of all the houses.

A thankful B. Sriyakanthie said in addition their children could now study under a more safe and stable light rather than kerosene lamps. The inmates of all houses were happy, but were caustic about politicians whose promise to light up their homes were never delivered.

Supun, very pleased that he was able to help people in need, said he intends to provide electricity to more families in the future.

The children are now able to study in a safe atmosphere… without the dangers posed by the kerosene lamp

The residents are thankful to Supun, but caustic about politicians and their empty promises
