OPA opposes rejected candidates entering Parliament as National List MPs
View(s):The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) has called for amendments to the Constitution to disqualify defeated candidates from being appointed to Parliament through the National List.
At their General Forum held on Friday (28), they passed a resolution stating that the OPA wholly and unreservedly condemns the appointments of defeated candidates at the August 17 Parliamentary Elections by the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA), United National Party (UNP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Tamil National Alliance (TNA), through their respective National Lists as their respective representatives to Parliament.
“As much as it is totally unethical and undemocratic, (this) also violates the spirit and cardinal principles of good governance,” it stated, adding that, the OPA calls upon the Government to forthwith amend the Sri Lanka Constitution to disqualify any such defeated candidate from being appointed to Parliament through a National List.
The resolution was proposed by Attorney-at-Law T.G. (Ged). Gooneratne and seconded by Jayantha Gunasekera P.C.
