Issues thousands of depositors face

View(s):

The Business Times (BT) has received dozens of letters over the past 12 to 18 months from desperate depositors of failed finance companies who have not seen the colour of their, often, hard-earned cash over periods stretching up to eight years.

Authorities have worked in fits and starts to alleviate their problems sometimes stepping in only if there was a political opportunity available. As time goes by and many of the depositors move into the sunset of their lives, quite a few errant directors of these institutions are living in the laps of luxury without a care in the world or have vanished without a trace.

The BT in particular has received many letters, mostly appeals imploring ‘us’ to move the authorities to “please ensure we get our payments back”, as one depositor pleaded some time back, for the simple reason that this newspaper has been vigorously reporting these issues, concerns and urging the authorities to move fast on these matters.
Here is another one of those appeals received this week by the Business Editor:

Golden Key re-payments
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the trouble taken to ensure the re-payments became a reality. I understand all those having up to Rs 2 million have been re-paid. When I last inquired the Accountant mentioned that decisions pertaining to deposits over Rs. 2 million have not been received (on payment dates). May I suggest that you very kindly draw the attention of those involved in assisting those depositors who had deposits over Rs.2 million and under Rs.2.5 million or under Rs. 5 million?
