Group of 2013 win L.D.H. Pieris Trophy

The Group of 2013 joins history as the youngest group to ever win a six-a-side cricket carnival and also the 1st Team to win the tournament from the first year of participation at the Royal College Cricket Carnival held at the Bloomfield ground. The tournament organised by the Royal College Group of 2001 was held at for the 15th consecutive year last Sunday.
Matches were played in three categories as Over-40, ages of 30 to 40 and the Open. The most important open tournament for L.D.H. Pieris Trophy which had strong teams including national cricketers, ex-Royal First XI cricketers and the Open category was won by the Royal College Group of 2013 ‘B’ team.
The 2013 team ‘B’ winning side was captained by Rakith Wickramasinghe and included Shahid Bahudeen, Anupa Hettiarachchi, Mujeeb Faleel, Pasindu Pieris, Osanda de Alwis, Tharindu Pinnaduwage and Lakshika Attygalle. The Over-40 category for E.C. Gunasekara Trophy was won by Royal College Group of 87 and the ages 30-40 was won by Group of 2003 who walked off with the Vijitha Weerasinghe Trophy.
Since its inception in the year 2001 has been one of the main calendar events of old Royalists, both young and old. It has been an event which has been run to raise funds to support development activities of College that keep the present Royalists well geared to face new challenges in the coming years. The Group of 2001 will be identifying a sport each year which is need of financial support and will take the responsibility of supporting the sport for a whole year, with the funds raised through this annual event.
