Fully fledged carrom team to 7th ICF tourney
Sri Lanka Carrom team consisting of four men and four women players will leave on Tuesday (6th) to India to take part in the 7th ICF Carrom Tournament to be held in India from October 7 to 11 at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex, New Delhi India.
Sri Lanka’s No.1 ranked Chamil Cooray will lead the Men’s team while Joseph Roshita, No. One women slicer will lead the Women’s team. Current World Champion Nishantha Fernando will have to keep Sri Lankas hopes alive with his experience and world recognition and Chamil Cooray will be the other player in the men’s segment who will be able to give the world players a tough time. Young Anas Ahamed ranked No. 3 and 4th ranked Dimal Senaratne are capable of upsetting any world ranked player with their touch in the locally concluded tournaments where they came out with outstanding performances.
Joseph Roshita will be the key player in the women’s team and she will have to lead from the front which will pave the way for Chalani Liyanage, ranked No2 along with Arosha Wickremasinghe and Madushika Kanchanamala ranked No. 3 and 4 respectively to lift Sri Lanka to a higher position in the world carrom rankings.
Germany, India, Italy, Pakistan, United Kingdom, Maldives, Korea, Bangladesh, Japan, Qatar, United States of America, Canada, Switzerland, Poland, Malaysia and France will take part in this world event. Sri Lanka’s main target will be to beat the high riding Indians as Sri Lanka had gone down fighting in most encounters against India in world and Asian competitions.
General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Carrom Federation Thumula Naotunne will represent Sri Lanka at the Congress of International Carrom Federation which will be held during the tournament at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex.
The officials to accompany the team will be Thumula Naotunne: Team Leader, Lalith Hewage: Manager Men’s team and Amitha Wickremasinghe: Women’s team manager.
