Intel Stick the new computer dynamo
‘Intel’ created by two Americans – Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore in 1968 – is today a multinational technology company and one of the world’s largest and highest valued semiconductor chip makers. It is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors, the processors found in most personal computers (PCs).
Revealing these facts, Indika de Zoysa, Country Business Manager Sri Lanka, Intel EM Ltd recently announced the availability in Sri Lankan market, of the latest computer – The Intel Computer Stick (ICS) which could be used as portable processor even fitted into a television or a monitor to transform them into full computers. What is unique in the ICS is that it is the size of a normal small mobile telephone which could be carried in the pocket.
He said that ICS comes in two versions – Windows and Ubuntu and said that in Sri Lanka they would be marketed at affordable prices, without compromising the quality. The price of the Windows version would about US$140 and Ubuntu version would be around $120 but indicated that he would not be able to tell the exact rupee converted price as within these price tags, the exact price would be decided by the vendors.
In displaying this small device in his hand, Mr. de Zoysa said that, “If you are looking to bring computing to new places, ICS is the perfect tool to transform any HDMI TV or monitor into a full computer.” The Windows version, he said would include 2 GB memory, 32 GB on-board storage and with McAfee Antivirus Plus. Ubuntu version has 1 GB memory and 8 GB on board storage. Both devices come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for connectivity, he said.
