Kelani Cables recognised for going green
View(s):Kelani Cables PLC was recognised for its “exceptional contribution” towards sustainable development with the National Green Award. Kelani Cables clinched the silver award in the private entrepreneur category at the National Green Awards ceremony held at the BMICH, the company said last week.
Government, private entities and schools dedicated to safeguard the environment were recognized at the event. Kelani Cables was the sole organization in the electrical and communication cable manufacturing sphere recognized at the National Green Awards 2015, it said. Mahinda Saranapala, CEO, Kelani Cables PLC said the Green Award has yet again endorsed the dedicated service of Kelani Cables towards enriching the country and its people.
“Kelani Cables was revamped in 2010 to fast track its endeavour to contribute towards sustainable development of the company. Within a very short span the company was able to bag a host of local and international awards. As a company we are dedicated to safeguard the environment. Wastage of resources and raw-material is kept at a minimal level within the parameters of the company. Kelani Cables as a socially responsible entity under its CSR initiative has gone to the extent of educating University and school children of the importance of safeguarding the environment,” he said.
Ms. Shyama Perera, Technical Services Manager of Kelani Cables PLC speaking of the company’s sustainable development initiatives said the company adheres to 3R (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) concept. She said that the company’s processes are aligned in such a way that maximum utilization of raw materials, energy and water is achieved“We constantly educate our workforce on green technologies. As a company going green, we have made emphasis on recycling.
Process waste of our main raw materials which are Copper and Aluminum are recycled fully. Process waste of other raw materials are given to local SME’s as an input raw material for their processes. Leftovers in our canteen and kitchen are directly put into the Green-gas unit to produce Green gas used for cooking purpose. Liquid fertilizer which is bi-product of green gas is used for company premises an also provided to workers who engage in growing vegetables and other crops. Every year Kelani Cables celebrates world environment day with activities involving our work force,” she added.
