More rains to come, warns Met. Department
View(s):Showers and thundershowers will occur round the country and rainfall could reach up to 100 mm in some parts of the country including the drought-affected North, North Western, Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces, the Department of Meteorology said.
The Department also warned people of ‘temporary localised strong winds’ during these thundershowers. Thundershowers are to be expected around 2 p.m. in Anuradhapura, Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and Mannar districts. Batticaloa and Trincomalee could also expect showers at times.
This week heavy rains in Kegalle district resulted in landslides in areas of Aranayake, Galigamuwa and Ruwanwella. Meanwhile landslide warnings were given out to about 22 families in the Deraniyagala area of Kegalle. People in this area were affected by trees that had fallen and the Met. Department had asked the people to be vigilant about falling trees.
In Bogawantalawa in the Central Province, heavy rains caused parts of Bogawantalawa town to go underwater. Boulders and branches of trees that had fallen on the roads caused temporary disruption to traffic movement. In Badulla 400 people and 224 in Nuwara Eliya were still displaced due to earthslips.
Meanwhile drought conditions still prevailed in the north and in most parts of the east. In Batticaloa 21,785 people have been affected by the drought, while in Ampara 115,518 were affected. In Jaffna 22,830 were affected while in Kilinochchi district 3,636 were affected by the drought.
