Animals are our friends
Animals have been friends of the people from a very long time. Even today, there is a strong bond between animals and people. Dogs, cats, and some other animals are kept as pets. All these animals are useful in many ways.
Cows and goats give us milk and from sheep we get wool to produce our clothes. In the past elephants were used to carry heavy things and at present they are used in cultural events like the Dalada Perahera and other pageants. The dog is another close friend of man. They help us to protect our homes from thieves. Dogs are very faithful to us unlike cats.
Unfortunately some people
ill-treat these innocent animals without having sympathy towards them. Therefore it is necessary to educate these people about the rights of these animals to live freely. I think it is the responsibility of the society to look after these animal friends.

Share and Care
My school organized a charity project called, ‘Share and Care’, for the fourth consecutive year. The objective of this project is to encourage the good habit of sharing among the students of the school.
Students contributed dry rations such as rice, noodles, milk powder, flour, tea leaves, sugar, gram etc. The project coincided with the World Food Day which falls on October 10.
All the collected rations were parceled and distributed to under-privileged households in selected rural areas by the prefects of our school.
I was happy that I got to contribute to such a worthy cause.

Discipline in a student’s life
Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Discipline is the key to success’?
This saying holds true for all times and all people of all ages but for students it holds a great value.
The glittering world of advertising, the glamourous world of modelling and cinema unfolds a new era in front of young people. Those of us who aren’t wise enough will be carried away by the fast winds of change. It is good to change and I’m certainly not against it. But the question is why do we need to change? This question should be answered by the young people before they blindly follow the latest trends.
A student should think and choose which path to follow. At a student’s level this can prove to be a real obstacle to overcome. Self-discipline is something that people like you and I should aim to achieve. Through this will come concentration, which will help a student to scale new heights of academic excellence. Success will be theirs for the people who value and practice
self-discipline and abide by it all the time. Then nothing can prevent us from attaining our goals in life.
So let’s aim to be a little more
self-disciplined from henceforth.

The first stupa of Sri Lanka
Thuparamaya is the first stupa built in Sri Lanka and the earliest monument of
the country. It was built by King Devanampiyatissa.
Mihindu Thera who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka during King Devanampiyatissa’s period requested the king to build a dagoba to show devotion and spread Buddhism among
Sri Lankans. It is believed that the Buddha’s right collar bone is enshrined in the stupa. This relic was a gift given by the Indian King Ashoka.
Thuparamaya dagoba has been built in the shape of a heap of paddy and now it is built in the shape of a bell.
The Thuparamaya was finished in 1862 AD but time to time it has been destroyed.
As of today, the large
monument has a diameter of 59 feet at the base. The dome is 11 feet 4 inches in height from the ground and it is 164 ½ feet in diameter. The shaped roof structure is called the ‘Vatadage’.

Zoo
The Zoo is a place where animals are kept in cages for people to see and enjoy. People visit the zoo to see the animals and to study about their behaviour.
In the zoo, there are tigers, lions, birds, elephants, monkeys and reptiles. People can watch such animals in the zoo without disturbing them. Some people disturb the animals by making them angry. It is not good.

Rose’s rose garden
Once upon a time there was an angel called Rose. She had a mother, sister and a brother. She loved roses. She was like a rose. She loved to walk around the rose garden. One day, when she went to see the roses at the rose garden, the roses were not there. So she was upset. Then a hero came and planted the roses.
Then she gave a flying kiss to the hero. So the hero blushed. Then the angel laughed. They were happy. They always talked near the rose garden. They touched water from the ponds. They swam in the pools. They sat on a bench near a lake where swans lived and talked to each other lovingly.
They got married and lived happily ever after. They lived in a castle; in a gem castle with gems and pearls and rubies. The roses were like rubies. The lilies were like pearls.

An unusual birthday party
I was waiting impatiently until this day arrived because it was my fourteenth birthday. I was imagining a grand birthday party. But all turned upside down. When I woke up that day, nobody took notice of me. Nothing seemed special to them. I was disappointed. How can my parents forget my birthday?
I got ready to go to school, amidst my disappointment. My father asked me if I wanted a lift to school. I agreed. But on the way to school, we didn’t turn from the junction that led to the school. When I asked him, he just ignored me. To my amazement, my father who always cracked jokes, didn’t even utter a word throughout our journey. I wondered why my family didn’t take any heed of me.
Father stopped the car in front of the children’s park. I was astonished.
He took my hand and blind-folded me.
I heard the song ‘Happy Birthday’ from the background. Father untied the cloth from my eyes.
Wow! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. All my relatives were there. There were mouth-watering cakes, juices and all sorts of goodies on a table. My parents and sister came towards me. They gave me a huge hug and handed over a box to me. What do you think that came out?
It was a live puppy.
