Jury salute for Johnny Mine
A Sri Lankan short film written and directed by Asanka Ilamperuma, ‘The Jonny Mine’ won the Special Jury Prize at the 4th Delhi Shorts International Film Festival held on November 1 in New Delhi, India.
The film which made the official selection list was selected out of more than 300 entries from around the globe.
The Johnny Mine also had become a much talked about short film at the festival. Its story revolves around an illiterate child soldier Kannan.
On the backdrop of the gruesome ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, Kannan, is determined to have his name written on his most prized possession, his gun.
He goes to Ramesh Anna to get his name written. His ego is bruised when he discovers that what’s actually written on his gun is not his name. This young combatant, battles to decode what is written in place of his name.
Thirty nine year-old writer and director, AsankaIlamperuma is a creative writer and filmmaker. With a strong academic background in Mass Communication, TV Production and Video Technology, Asanka has created some of Sri Lanka’s most-loved advertising campaigns over the past decade.
As the Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Sri Lanka, his work has not only won numerous local awards, but has also been recognized at several international festivals.
This year Asanka had the honour of being chosen into the Grand Jury of the New York Festivals International Advertising Awards 2015.
‘The Jonny Mine’ was also screened at the Colombo International Film Festival, held at the Sri Lanka Media Training Institute Colombo 07.
