Unity Mission Trust completes Unity Camp 8 in Jaffna
View(s):The Unity Mission Trust recently held its 25th milestone event – Unity Camp 8, at Chundikuli Girls’ College in Jaffna.
Over 500 student leaders between the ages of 17-19 years, from 67 schools, accompanied by 102 teachers, attended the camp which focused on the themes of unity, integration and reconciliation.
Minister of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Hindu Affairs D.M. Swaminathan was the chief guest at the opening ceremony and a special message was delivered by Governor of the Northern Province, H.M.G.S. Palihakkara.
The organisers had an unprecedented demand from national schools in the North-Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces for their students to attend the programme.
Additionally, the quota for students from the Northern Province was filled within a short time with 280 students being selected to represent the entire Northern Province.
The theme of the event ‘Powering Dreams: Building Leaders’ focused on helping youth to build bridges of friendship and unity, whilst learning important life skills.
The students were divided into 20 groups with each group consisting of a mix of students from across the nine provinces of Sri Lanka.
The first two days of the camp were filled with workshops and lectures motivating the campers with lessons that focused on values for a successful life, becoming a leader and powering dreams.
The dangers of drug addiction, alcoholism were also highlighted as well as the prevention of sexual abuse.
The second day of the camp included time for sports where the groups competed against each other in a fun series of track and field events.
On day two, lectures were delivered by Minister of Education, Sports and Culture of the North T. Gurukularajah; Chief Editor, Valampurii, Dr. A. Vithuran, the DMO Mullaitivu and Secretary Ministry of Education of the North and the Founder Trustee of Unity Mission Trust R. Raveenthiran.
