Krishan and Samadhi make Kandy proud
Krishan Wickremaratne from Vidyartha College, Kandy and Samadhi Hettiarachchi of Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy created the biggest upsets at the Junior National Table Tennis Championships 2015. Organised and conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka this year’s tournament produced a high standard of Table Tennis by this up and coming peddlers as most of the final games went up to the deciding fifth set came to a close at the St. Thomas’ Indoor Stadium tables recently.
Meeting Udaya Ranasinghe, the only Gold Medal winner at the Junior Asian Table Tennis championship 2015, Krishan Wickremaratne came out with flying colours to defeat the reigning junior national champion 4-0 in the Boy’s Under 18 finals. Though Udaya gave a tough fight but Wickremaratne on the other hand played a sensible game which never allowed Ranasinghe to play his usual attacking game.
In the Girl’s Under 18 single-final Samadhi Hettiarachchi faced stiff opposition from Sri Lanka National player Ruvini Kannangara to go down fighting winning two games in a five set game. Kannangara made every effort to maintain the lead after winning the third and fourth sets but failed at the deciding final set surrendering a 3-2 win to the new champion.
In the Boy’s Junior Doubles Krishan Wickremaratne partnering Udaya Ranasinghe defeated D. Kavishka/P De Silva combination with ease 3-0. Hansani Piumila and C. Fernando were given a close call by B. Rajaguru/R. Karandanarachchi combination at the Girl’s Junior Doubles final.

Under-10: Bimandie Bandara (Sussex College) beat Nadithi Rehansa (Prajapathi College) 3-2 (11/7, 4/11, 7/11, 14/12, 11/1); Under-12: Jithara Warnakulasuriya (Ladies College) beat Kavishka Kavindi (Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda) 3-0 ( 11/8, 11/7, 11/7); Under-15: Imasha De Silva (Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda) beat Natasha Sadavinee (Visakha Vidyalaya) 3-1 (11/8, 11/5, 5/11, 12/10); Under-18: Samadhi Hettiarachchi (Mahamaya, Kandy) beat Ruvini Kannangara (Musaeus College) 3-2 (11/6, 11/7, 9/11, 8/11, 11/9).
